National pub chain JD Wetherspoon said “extremely disappointing” delays in rebuilding the city’s transport system had become “unacceptable” after the entrance to its largest pub in the city was surrounded by another set of road works for the second time. – less than a year. The work removed bus stops outside The Square Peg on Corporation Street in ten months and counts, while the entire tram network from Wolverhampton to Birmingham, which runs along Bull Street, remains “suspended until further notice.”
With two bars on Broad Street that still can’t see the West Midlands Tube tram, nearly five years after work began on the £ 149m Westside extension, JD Wetherspoon has called for more transparency on what happens on the network.
Currently, Corporation Street operates outside its giant Square Peg facility – which has a capacity of 930 people – and is involved in utilities affected by the West Midlands metro expansion plan down Lower Bull Street to High Street Deritend / Digbeth through the future HS2 website. Curzon Street.

From July to the end of October last year, the entire Corporation Street tram line was rebuilt after just five years and two months of operation to connect with the need to build a new delta intersection outside the pub to facilitate the Eastside Extension. The video above shows the scale of the interruption on August 30, 2021, five weeks after the start of work.
During this work, a giant hole was dug outside the main door of The Square Peg on the corner of Bull Street and Corporation Street – now the area has been excavated again. Meanwhile, work on building the 1.2-mile Westside extension from Grand Central to 54 Hagley Road, which began on June 12, 2017, is not yet complete.

Phase one between Stephenson Street and Centenary Square went public on December 11, 2019. Phase two from Centenary Square to 54 Hagley Road was due to go into operation before Christmas last year, and tram passengers can then pass two more pubs. Wetherspoon, Soloman Cutler and the Figure of Eight in the heart of Broad Street’s entertainment district.

But even if the rest of the network is reactivated between Wolverhampton and Birmingham, the second phase of Broad Street services is not expected to begin before the fifth anniversary of Grand Central’s construction work next month.
The next deadline for Broad Street is July 28, the day the Commonwealth Games begin in just two months, but Wetherspoon said he can only “hope” the trams run by then.
Square Peg was in the middle of the Bull Street tram stop and Corporation Street bus stops, but both have not actually been in operation for most of the past year. Most of the concrete for the Broad Street line was poured in a major operation on June 24, 2020, but testing of the electrical cables above began only in March this year.

A Wetherspoon spokesman told BirminghamLive: “Road work outside Square Peg has been extremely frustrating for many months, causing constant disruption to our staff and customers.
“It was extremely disappointing that there was no communication or consultation with any of the local companies concerned.
“Similarly, delays and disruptions in tram services for both Square Peg and Soloman Cutler and Broad Street’s Figure of Eight are unacceptable. We hope the trams are ready in time for the British Community Games in Birmingham at the end of July. “

A spokesman for the Midland Metro Alliance said: “The work currently underway outside Square Peg is part of the main structure for the expansion of Birmingham Eastside Metro and is not part of the track replacement work on Corporation Street.
“Much of the activity includes upgrading and future isolation of existing utilities in the area, which is not required for the subway. Work, which includes the installation of bus stops, road surfaces and pavement, should continue next month (June). “
Asked why the Hagley Road endpoint has not yet been completed five months after the line opened, the Midland Metro Alliance added: “We are currently finishing work on this section in preparation for the West Midlands Metro line delivery in the coming weeks. Preparations are also under way for a future transport extension on Hagley Road. “
The Corporation Street line was restored after only five years and two months of operation, as the work needed to build a new delta intersection outside Square Peg would close it anyway. As the line will need to be rebuilt much earlier than expected for reasons not fully disclosed, West Midlands Mayor Andy Street agreed that it would make sense to carry out both tasks together.

Although the replacement of the Corporation Street runway and its delta intersection was completed before the end of October, the expansion of Lower Bull Street remains largely a roadblock.
But MMA told BirminghamLive that the finish line for this section is emerging, saying: “Much of the work on this section will be completed before the Games, and the last part will be completed in the autumn of 2022.
Another area where construction work continues is the High Street Deritend in the area popularly known as Digbeth. This section is approximately 800 meters long and a temporary surface will allow work here to be stopped during the British Community Games.

MMA told BirminghamLive: “Work on the High Street Deritend will be suspended for the Games and the area will be represented with some traffic management measures. These works will be resumed in the autumn. “
On May 13, Mark Corbin, director of network sustainability for transport in the West Midlands, sent a letter to stakeholders, but again could not promise when services would resume.
The letter said: “Buses and trams currently running on Broad Street are undergoing important tests and we are excited to welcome bus services back to Broad Street in June and look forward to meeting the tram later this summer.
“Work on testing and commissioning and training of Westside tram extension drivers will continue until June and a start date for passenger services will be set in due course.
Westside of Birmingham is now well connected by fast, frequent and convenient public transport with:
- regular West Midlands rail services at Five Ways Station;
- affordable bicycle rental through the West Midlands Cycle centers
- convenient walking routes to and from the city center.
“We understand that you, like us, will be excited about the gradual improvements in public transport that will be online from June.
In recent weeks, there has been more work on pavements on both sides of the Corporation Street of the Northwest Arcade at its intersection with Bull Street and Lower Bull Street.
