2022 Primary Elections: Live updates for the May 24 competitions

ATLANA – US Representative Marjorie Taylor Green defeated five Republicans in Georgia’s primary election, testing conservative voters’ tolerance of the divisive policies of the congresswoman’s first term.

Green, a celebrity on the right wing of the Republican Party, will be back on the ballot in the November general election. She will face the winner of the trilateral Democratic primary in the 14th district of northwest Georgia, a place drawn to give the Republicans a huge advantage.

Jennifer Strahan and other Republican contenders have tried unsuccessfully to convince voters that Green’s combative rhetoric and desire to accept baseless conspiracy theories are not good for her constituents.

Green raised more than $ 9 million to defend his seat and spent more than $ 6.6 million in the primary to repel attacks from his own party. She remained on the ballot after voters made unsuccessful efforts to disqualify her, claiming she encouraged the Capitol uprising on January 6 and the riots that violated Congressional certification of Joe Biden’s presidential victory.

OTHER DEVELOPMENTS:

ATLANA – Georgia’s Republican Attorney General has defeated a major Republican rival in the race with the support of former President Donald Trump.

Unofficial election results show that Attorney General Chris Carr won the Republican nomination over John Gordon, who is largely campaigning against Trump’s baseless allegations of widespread election fraud.

Gordon said he wanted an investigation into the 2020 election and accused Carr of not doing enough. Carr categorically said that Trump and the two Republican senators from Georgia have lost this election and there is no need to investigate.

Appointed to the governor’s office by the governor in 2016, Carr is seeking his second full term. It recognizes its best achievements, such as prosecuting human trafficking, securing a $ 636 million opioid deal, and defending the 2021 Georgia Voting Act.

___

ATLANA – Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp defeats Donald Trump-backed candidate David Purdue after fierce pressure from the former president to punish Kemp for not canceling the 2020 election.

Kemp’s victory on Tuesday marked a new general election race against Democrat Stacey Abrams, who did not run in the primary. The rematch in November of their competition in 2018 will probably be one of the most expensive and closely watched in the country.

Purdue was courted by Trump to run in retaliation for Kemp’s disagreement with the former president’s efforts to undo his defeat in Georgia’s 2020 election. Purdue accepted Trump’s election lies by opening two debates between the candidates. the claim that the 2020 vote was “falsified and stolen”. Election officials found no evidence of fraud after numerous inspections.

Kemp survived the challenge, using the power of his post to push a package of legislation through the Republican-controlled Georgian legislature. He signed measures that reduce taxes, allow people to carry hidden guns without permits and help ban transgender girls from playing sports in high school.

The governor also used a hefty state treasury to increase the salaries of civil servants and announced two large factories for electric vehicles.

___

ATLANA – The great football player Herschel Walker, approved by former President Donald Trump, won the primary elections in the Senate of Georgia.

Walker defeated five Republicans, including Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black and former Trump administration official and Navy veteran Latham Sadler.

Walker is a newcomer to politics, but has had almost unparalleled recognition in Georgia since his days as a college football player. He led the University of Georgia football team to a national title in the 1980 season and won the Heisman Trophy in 1982.

Trump, a close friend of Walker’s, backed his escape despite questions about Walker’s business relationship and history of violence against women. Walker was open to his long struggle with mental illness and acknowledged violent urges.

He won the primary, although he missed debates with his Republican opponents and made some blunders.

___

ATLANA – US Senator Rafael Warnock has won Georgia’s primary election in Georgia as he seeks to retain his seat in the Senate in the upcoming by-elections.

Warnock defeated beauty industry professional Tamara Johnson-Shealy.

The junior senator and pastor is seeking a full six-year term in the Senate after winning a special election in 2021 for the last two years of the term of former Republican Senator Johnny Isaacson. Republicans believe Warnock is vulnerable and are turning to his place in their efforts to regain a Senate majority.

Warnock is a senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where the late Rev. Martin Luther King King once preached. On Capitol Hill, he attacked Republicans’ push for tighter voting rules like “Jim Crow in New Clothes.”

In Georgia, he highlighted his work on raising funds for healthcare, national security research and other projects. He also stressed his efforts to try to limit the cost of insulin and temporarily suspend the federal gas tax.

___

ATLANA – Stacey Abrams won the Democratic nomination for governor of Georgia after losing the 2018 race to incumbent Republican Gov. Brian Kemp.

Abrams became a star in the Democratic Party after her first gubernatorial election and ran without resistance in this year’s primary. She has become a leading proponent of voting rights and is credited with creating the organizational foundation for Joe Biden to become the first Democratic presidential candidate to win Georgia in 28 years.

Abrams is likely to face Kemp or former US Senator David Purdue in a November contest that is set to be one of the most expensive and closely watched in the country.

At the heart of Abrams’ platform is the call to extend Medicaid to all adults. But she also stressed her support for abortion rights and opposition to state laws removing the requirement to allow a concealed handgun in a public place.

Abrams showed the ability to raise millions, but Republicans raised the specter of her becoming governor in an attempt to unite a party torn apart by former President Donald Trump’s attempts to overthrow Kemp.

___

ATLANA – Stacey Abrams, a Democratic nominee for governor of Georgia, says she expects personal attacks to continue as she approaches the November general election.

Abrams was asked at a press conference in Atlanta on Tuesday for comment the day before by Republican rival David Purdue, who said Abrams had “humiliated her own race” with remarks she had made. She turned the conversation to Perdue’s opponent, Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, who is a leader in research and fundraising.

“I have received an inelegant statement that I will continue to make – this means that Brian Kemp is a failed governor who is not interested in the people of Georgia,” Abrams said.

On the eve of Tuesday’s primary, Perdue threw a photo of Abrams’ remarks at a Democrat dinner on Saturday. She said: “I’m tired of hearing that we are the best state in the country to do business when we are the worst state in the country to live in,” and went on to explain that when Georgia has grim access charts to mental health and maternal mortality, “then you are not a place to live.”

“She humiliates her own race when it comes to that,” Purdue said Monday in an interview with conservative radio host John Fredericks and former Trump adviser Peter Navarro.

Abrams said he expects Republicans to continue to attack her personally.

“I’ve heard Republicans attack me for the last six months, but they’ve done nothing to attack the challenges facing Georgia,” Abrams said.

AUSTIN, Texas – The primary runoff on Tuesday in Texas will test how much weight the Bush family still has in America’s largest red state in the race for Attorney General.

But George W. Bush, who is challenging the contested Attorney General Ken Paxton for the Republican nomination, says Tuesday’s vote is not about the family dynasty.

Speaking in Austin after the vote, Bush said the election was “about doing the right thing and supporting the right people for the right services.”

Paxton is the subject of an ongoing FBI investigation into allegations of corruption and is still awaiting trial on securities fraud charges after being indicted in 2015.

Bush, who now serves as land commissioner in Texas, called Paxton a “crook … who is constantly abusing his office.”

Bush called a runoff against Paxton in a massive quadripartite primary in March. But he still lags behind Paxton by 20 points in the March election, underscoring Paxton’s continued political resilience in Texas.
