York’s regional police have announced crackdown on stunts and street races on Wednesday, releasing a new video of a recent incident in which a vehicle was caught on camera making donuts and speeding along busy roads.
The crackdown is part of Project ERASE, an annual initiative designed to educate drivers about the dangers of speeding.
“We are all well aware of the devastating carnage resulting from speeding and dangerous operation of motor vehicles. We have all seen the horrifying photos of confused cars and the tragic loss of life caused by stupid and dangerous activities. Ian Hill told reporters. “What we don’t see often are broken families and the heartache they carry with them for the rest of their lives.”
“The reality is street racing and dangerous driving is illegal and there is no place on our roads or highways.”
In 2021, York police made 74 arrests in connection with street racing and driving stunts.
About 70 of those arrests were part of Project Takeover, an investigation into organized stunts in the Greater Toronto area.
68 charges have been filed in the penal code, in addition to 510 charges of highway traffic.
Hill said eight arrests have been made so far this year and police have filed 44 criminal charges and 10 traffic charges.
York’s regional police also released a video of their Air2 helicopter in an incident that occurred on May 12.
The video shows a driver making donuts in a parking lot before driving on the highway, passing cars on the ramp.
Police say in the description of the video that the driver was traveling at about 200 km / h along the coast of the highway. The video shows the black car passing a number of cars stuck in traffic.
The vehicle was then seen traveling dangerously through multiple intersections, circling around cars before pulling into an underground car park for a city complex.
The driver, who police said was 19, was then seen fleeing the area on foot. Eventually, they were detained by officers on the spot.
Police did not say what charges were brought against the driver.
Anyone caught driving 40 kilometers per hour or more above the speed limit below 80 kilometers per hour will be charged as a stuntman in Ontario.
In areas where the speed limit is over 80 km / h, the driver will face stunt fees if he exceeds the limit by more than 50 km / h.
