Drugs may be to blame for the rise in mass killings around the world, Daily Mail columnist Peter Hitchens said today.

In a heavy column in Mail + – our new first-class sister website – he says the lack of discussion on the link between drugs and gun violence makes further tragedies inevitable.

His comments follow the murder of 19 children and two teachers at Rob Elementary School in Uwalde, Texas.

Hitchens writes: “Mass shootings of the kind we now see all too often are a very recent problem. They really started only in the 60s of the last century. Can anyone think of anything else that really developed in Western societies in the 1960s?

“By blaming these events or the lack of gun control, or some huge Islamist conspiracy, or ‘right-wing extremism’, we are almost completely missing the point,” he wrote. And these things will continue to happen until we wake up to the danger.
