Earlier this month, Pixel fans were given a preview of the company’s entire range for 2022, from this year’s Pixel 7 to next year’s Pixel Tablet. However, the device that was missing was the Pixel Notepad. As it turns out, Google seems to have decided to postpone the foldable Pixel Notepad again.
Elec reports that Google has slowed down the “Pixel Notepad” – the name we first announced earlier this year – for the second time. The change in the company’s plans probably means that the device will not be released in the fourth quarter of 2022, as we have already learned. This report supports the originally planned timeline and claims that Google originally planned to show the device at the end of 2021.
According to sources familiar with the device, the reason for this delay in the “Pixel Notepad” may be that it failed to meet expectations. Past rumors have suggested that Google’s device lags behind Samsung’s Fold series.
Pixel Notepad will be Google’s first foldable smartphone when it escapes delays. The device is expected to have a form factor similar to the Oppo Find N, with a compact external display but a large and wide internal display. The external display is expected to be a 5.78-inch panel with a 7.57-inch internal display with ultra-thin glass. As we announced earlier, the device will use a Tensor chip, although this latest delay probably means that at least the second generation Tensor processor will be used. We also found evidence that the device will use approximately the same array of cameras as the Pixel 6a.
9to5 Get it from Google
Pixel Notepad is a product that I am very excited about. Folding presents a whole new world of possibilities for our handheld computers. But I’m really glad that Google is in no hurry to join this market.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is what I currently carry with my Pixel 6 Pro and even with Samsung’s level of experience, the folding ones are far from perfect. A year after the release of Fold, my personal device has accumulated some debris in the hinge, which means that it is not as smooth as it was before. And on top of that, there are still problems with the durability of the folders, which have not yet been resolved. With Google’s patchy customer service experience – which, to the company’s credit, is getting better – I’m not sure I want to use something as fragile as folding. But for now we will have to wait and see. Google obviously has a lot of support for Pixel at the moment, so at some point it comes folding. More time in the oven sounds like a good plan.
