HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT –
Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, who came to Congress representing Sandy Hook, asked his colleagues to finally pass legislation to address the nation’s ongoing problem of gun violence as the country’s last school shooting took place on Tuesday. in Uwald, Texas.
Rooted Murphy went up and asked lawmakers to do what they failed to do after 26 students and professors were killed in Newtown, the area he represented as a congressman.
The Democrat delivered a passionate speech, urging his colleagues to finally find a compromise.
“Our hearts are broken for these families. Every drop of love and thoughts and prayers we can send, we send,” said Murphy, who represents Newtown, Connecticut, where Sandy Hook Elementary School is located, as a former U.S. representative.
“But I’m here on this floor to pray to literally fall to my knees and beg my colleagues. Find a way forward here. Work with us to find a way to pass laws that make this less likely.” he said .
The tragedy in Texas looked similar to the 2012 mass shooting in Connecticut, where 20-year-old Adam Lanza made his way into a locked building and then killed 20 first-graders and six teachers with a legally purchased AR-15 rifle. from his mother. He then committed suicide when police arrived. Before going to school, Lanza fatally shot his mother at their home in Newtown.
“I just don’t understand why people here think we’re powerless,” Murphy told reporters. – We are not.
Murphy said he was “so inclined to hug to find a compromise” on legislation. “I want to show that they want to show this country that we care.”
A report by a child advocate in Connecticut said Lanza’s severe and deteriorating mental health problems, concerns about violence and access to his mother’s weapons “proved a recipe for mass murder.”
Advocacy groups formed after the shooting in Connecticut were outraged by the news of the shooting at Rob Elementary School, which killed at least 14 children and a teacher.
“We are devastated by another heartbreaking school shooting incident in America – this time in Uwalde, Texas, nearly 10 years after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting tragedy,” Poe Murray, president of the Newtown Action Alliance, said in a written article. statement. “Over the last decade, we have warned all Americans, including elected politicians across the nation, that if there could be a mass shooting in Sandy Hook, then it could happen anywhere. We have asked presidents, all members of Congress, governors and state representatives to strengthen federal and state gun laws to keep our families and communities safe. “
Murphy expressed hope that a compromise on arms control measures was possible.
“I understand that my Republican colleagues will not agree with everything I can support, but there is a common denominator we can find,” he said, acknowledging that the problem of gun violence could not be solved overnight. “But when we do something, we at least stop sending this quiet message of approval to these assassin-breaking assassins who see the highest levels of government doing nothing, shooting after a shooting.”
