Badial boss kills wife with machete before committing suicide, investigation says

The head of a famous supermarket in Birmingham killed his wife before setting himself on suicide, an investigation said. Seva Singh Badial, 87, who ran the Badial department store on Soho Road in Handsworth, repeatedly hit his 73-year-old wife, Sukjit, with a machete in the living room of their home in Coventry.

Then he went to the garden and sat in an outdoor fireplace. Mr. Badial, wearing his blood-stained clothes, was filmed by a video surveillance camera pouring liquid on himself before setting it on fire. Their bodies were found on June 29, 2021.

An investigation into their death in Coventry Coroner’s Court found that “there was a farewell note on a chair in the living room written by the deceased describing a dispute with his wife.”

Delroy Henry, a district investigator for Coventry and Warwickshire, concluded that Mr Badial committed suicide while his wife was killed illegally.

In the recording of the hearing, Ms. Badial said the deceased “suffered a number of injuries to her upper body and limbs, which are described as protective actions to repel a blade tool.”

A large hook (garden machete) was found on her body, along with a wrench, which also hit her in the face, according to the investigation.

Ms. Badial died of head and face injuries while the cause of her husband’s death was a fire, the coroner said. Hundreds of people went out on social media to express their sadness when the news of their death came and to offer their condolences and prayers for the couple.

The couple has four children and seven grandchildren. A statement from their family said they were “ardent supporters of good causes and committed members of the Midlands local community”.
