Police find man after gunfire signals force 4 Toronto schools blocked

Two schools in Toronto have been closed, and two have been detained and secured after reports of a man with a rifle walking near Maberley Crescent and Oxhorn Road in Port Union.

Toronto police said the calls came just before 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Police said they found the man, who was described as a late teenager or in his early 20s, wearing a white hat and a three-quarter coat.

Officers are on the scene and “fired” a firearm, according to police tweets.

The suspect was wounded and paramedics were on the scene, police said.

“There is no greater threat to public safety,” police said shortly after 2 p.m.

Joseph Howe High School, Charlottetown Young School, and the Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute are closed. Charlottetown Children’s Public School was previously blocked, but has since moved into custody and security along with the young Centennial Road Public School, according to tweets from the Toronto School Board.

Detention and security is the school’s response to an incident in the general vicinity, but not on or near the school property. The day continues normally inside the school, the TDSB said, but as a precaution, the outside doors are locked and no one can come in or out of the building.

The incident came just two days after a gunman barricaded himself in a classroom at a Texas elementary school and killed 19 children and two teachers.
