PS5
Sony
How crazy is the demand for the PlayStation 5? Sony made a striking comparison in a recent presentation on the future of the brand and the current situation with sales of consoles.
We all know that PS5s sell immediately when they appear … everywhere, but Sony explains how fast the system is selling compared to its predecessor:
- In the US, at this stage of the console’s life cycle, the PS4 sold 80,000 units in nine days.
- The PS5 sold an average of 80,000 units in 82 minutes.
- These are 6 sales per minute for PS4, nearly 1000 sales per minute for PS5.
They also have an “interest on purchase” chart in the console one year after launch, where the PS4 has 28% interest and the PS5 has 55% interest. Again, all of this stems from the fact that so many people who want a PS5 just haven’t been physically able to get one, and that’s the only reason the PS4 outperforms the PS5 at this point in both life cycles.
The concept of “sales per minute” does not mean that PS5 sales would be 10,000% higher than PS4 if they could only produce enough units, but it is still quite fascinating. The slide is titled “Unprecedented Demand,” which certainly doesn’t seem like an exaggeration, and it’s easy to imagine that the PS5 would probably break all console sales records if Sony were able to produce more units. Instead, they promise a shortage that will continue in 2023 due to ongoing supply chain / component problems. Things may not return to normal by 2024, the company said.
The PS5’s shortage seems to go hand in hand with another development that Sony has begun to realize is shooting in the foot, limiting game sales to only the PlayStation and PlayStation, especially now in an era where not enough boxes can be used. This seems to be partly behind their drive to deliver more PC games, and they’re reporting a huge jump in PC sales due to recent ports like God of War, and other exclusives like Returnal seem to be on their way to a much bigger PC path. fast way from previous games.
Microsoft has been selling different Xbox computers for some time, and this is different from Sony, which makes later ports sold separately, but they may differ due to the high demand for their exclusives outside the PlayStation ecosystem. Expect the computer to become an increasingly important part of their business as they expand this concept, as Sony says it wants half of its gaming sales to be computer and mobile by 2025.
