A huge Russian plane that was stopped at Toronto Pearson International Airport in February is collecting significant parking bills.
A Russian cargo plane belonging to the Volga-Dnieper airline has been parked in Toronto since February 27, after the Canadian government closed the airspace to Russian aircraft operators.
The order banning Russian aircraft operators from Canadian airspace is still in force, which means that the aircraft is still not allowed to leave Canada.
According to the Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA), which manages Toronto Pearson, the owner of the plane is charged 74 cents per minute for parking.
“To save you money, it’s $ 1,065.60 for every 24 hours,” GTAA spokesman Ryan White told CTV News Toronto.
The plane was parked in Toronto Pearson for 88 days, meaning the owner had amassed more than $ 93,000 in taxes, not including taxes.
White said he could not comment further on the fees or whether they sent an invoice to the airline for legal reasons.
In February, the An-124 arrived in Canada from China, via Anchorage and Russia. The plane was planning to leave Toronto shortly after arriving in Canada, but the flight was canceled.
Transport Canada said the plane was banned from taking off due to a ban on Russian planes in Canadian airspace.
In a statement to CTV News Toronto on Thursday, Transport Canada said it had no plans to allow the plane to leave.
“NOTAM remains in place and has no plans to revise or change NOTAM at this time,” said Transport Canada. “Transport Canada is informing the Russian authorities about the NOTAM we currently have.”
