LONDON, May 28 (Reuters) – A fire tore apart a superyacht in southwest England on Saturday, sending thick streams of black smoke into the sky and briefly letting the burning ship drift through its harbor.
Police and firefighters said the 85-foot (26-meter) yacht in Torquay, Devon, was “well lit”, and firefighters said the ship contained about 8,000 liters of diesel fuel, prompting local areas and nearby beaches to be cleared.
“Because of the levels of smoke and fumes, we are asking residents in the area to keep their doors and windows closed at the time,” Devon and Cornwall police said. “Members of the public are also urged to avoid the area and the beaches are being cleared by public safety officials.”
Police said no one was injured in the blaze, and the yacht has since been secured after breaking free. The police did not say who owned the yacht.
