Winnipeg High School students find a body during a community cleansing exercise

A group of Winnipeg High School students came across a dead body in a field during a class exercise on Friday.

Temb Fransen, head of the Pembina Trails school department, said students participating in a community clean-up day at the École South Pointe school were training when they encountered the body in a field opposite the school.

The administration then sent a letter to the school community to inform parents of what had happened, he said.

“In this case, the school administration clearly and rightly believes that the whole school community needs to realize this,” Fransen said.

“It just happened and that’s why I wasn’t informed about how the children were doing. I can only imagine that those who were closest to the situation will be quite traumatized by this. “

Fransen said police were investigating, but he did not know what had been found so far.

Const. Claude Chancy of the Public Information Service says an autopsy will be performed in the coming days to establish the identity and cause of death.

Chancy said the body was of an adult, but could not confirm their race or gender at this time.

The investigation continues.

Orientation counselors at the École South Pointe School, resource teachers and departmental psychologists will be available on Monday to support students concerned about the finding, Fransen said.
