Sakari Maninen scored after extra time to lift hosts Finland to a 4-3 victory over Canada in a wild gold medal match at the World Men’s Hockey Championship on Sunday.
Finland also scored two goals from Michael Granlund and another from Joel Army. Dylan Cosens, Zack Whitecloud and Max Comtois scored for Canada, and Matt Barzal scored with three assists.
The hosts, the Finns, took a 3-1 lead at the end of the third before the Canadians scored two goals, with the goalkeeper withdrawing.
Whitecloud scored with a time of 2:12 left to lead Canada in one goal before Comtois imposed a three-on-three overtime draw with the remaining 84 seconds in the rules.
The winner of Manninen was noted in the game with a force of six minutes in the extra frame after Thomas Chabot was booed for a minor hook.
This is the fourth time Finland has won the World Cup.
Canada took a 1-0 lead in the third period after Cosens opened the scoring in a powerful Canadian game four minutes after the second period.
Granlund, who plays for the Nashville Predators of the NHL, tied the score at the start of the third with a five-to-three advantage, with Canadian Noah Gregor (stumbling) and Cole Salinger (high sticking) sitting in the penalty area.
Canadian goalkeeper Chris Driger suffered an injury during the game and was replaced by reserve Matt Tomkins, who quickly passed the second goal to Backlund.
Earlier on Sunday, the Czech Republic defeated the United States 8-4 to win the bronze medal after David Pastrnak scored a hat-trick, all in the third period.
