A 10-year-old fifth-grader in Florida was arrested on Saturday and charged with a written threat of mass shooting, police said.

When the suspect, a Patriot Elementary School student in Cape Coral, Florida, claimed to have sent the threatening text, the school’s threat team was immediately notified and began an analytical investigation, police said.

The Criminal Investigation Department of the youth services took over the case due to the age of the child. Police arrested the boy after detectives questioned him and determined the probable reason for his arrest.

“This student’s behavior is disgusting, especially after the recent tragedy in Uwalde, Texas,” said Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno. “Making sure our children are safe is paramount. We will have law and order in our schools! My team did not hesitate for a second … NOT a SECOND to investigate this threat.”

“Right now is not the time to act like a petty criminal,” Marceno said. “It’s not funny. This child made a false threat and is now experiencing real consequences.”

Marceno forcibly took to social media against potential killers after the deadly mass shooting in Uwalde, Texas, in which 18-year-old shooter Salvador Ramos killed 19 children and two teachers.
