Top Gun: Maverick took off at the box office this weekend and is blown away by tracking my relatively modest box office forecasts. We knew the start would be huge and the best of Tom Cruise’s career, but early estimates show that Top Gun: Maverick is rising to incredible heights.
Top Gun: Maverick grossed approximately $ 124 million during the three-day Memorial Day weekend. It seems that the total amount for four days may jump to 151 million dollars, but we will inform you about the exact figures when they are revealed tomorrow. This will be the best weekend of Remembrance Day we’ve seen in a very long time, and there may be enough need for speed here to surpass the previous record holder, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End of 2007 ( $ 153 million in four days). This is very possible, as sometimes the actual numbers extend beyond the early estimates.
Globally, Top Gun: Maverick opened up to $ 248 million, the best opening Tom Cruise has seen on the global front. According to the deadline, 11.1 million moviegoers will have watched the sequel until the end of Monday, which enjoyed 2 million viewers over the weekend of the 1986 film. So how did Top Gun: Maverick achieve excellence? Well, the film really distorted the elderly by 55% over the age of 35 and raised men to 58%. It is encouraging that the audience was also 42% women, which means that they came out bigger, and although the film is distorted older, the breakdown of the demo for the young audience is also impressive. The crowd under 35 represented 45% of the audience, and the audience aged 18-34 was 37%. This means that the film is played to a very wide audience, not just older fans who are nostalgic for Maverick’s return. Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, summed up the huge wide success of Top Gun: Maverick:
“If you thought the movies were dead, go see Top Gun: Maverick and then tell me what you think. This film heralds the return of the summer blockbuster and is a catalyst that will accelerate the search for cinema, such as the F-18, which breaks the sound barrier. There’s no way to sit in a theater with a huge screen and bumping speakers in your chest and walk away with the thought that there’s another way you want to experience Top Gun: Maverick, and take your hats off to Tom Cruise, Joe Kosinski and their fearless creative team for what they have achieved. ”
Where does Top Gun: Maverick go from here? All signs point to very strong verbal messages. The new 97% rating of Rotten Tomatoes has already been praised, but the 99% rating of the audience shows that it is pleasant for almost everyone who has watched it. Then there is the fact that the film won a VERY rare CinemaScore “A +” from the audience on the first day. It can be argued that Top Gun fans are simply pushing for these results, but it is so extremely positive that it is clear to me that its positive reception is widespread among old school fans and the new generation of movie buffs. It was all a team effort among all the forces involved in this sequel, but the lion’s share of the film’s success belongs to Tom Cruise. It really is a marketing machine for one person and probably one of the last legitimate movie stars we work in business today. This is a victory for the box office as a whole and for someone who is really interested in the cinematic experience.
In second place is Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which raised $ 16.4 million in three days. That’s a 49% drop and a second below the 50% threshold, which is stellar, given Top Gun: Maverick definitely ate up some of its audience this weekend. I guess this shows that there is room for many blockbusters, even if one is 4 weeks old at the moment. To date, Dr. Strange in the multiverse of madness has earned $ 370.7 million at the National Boxing Office. Its global figures are coming and will be added to the final box office report tomorrow.
The Bob’s Burgers Movie debuted in third place, earning $ 12.6 million. That’s about a million less than I predicted, but given that the film caters to a very niche audience of fans of the series, that’s a pretty good start to my book. It will definitely get a bit of a hit on Remembrance Day and I think we’ll call it a win at the end of the day before it continues to have a great life in PVOD and streaming. The film also received an “A” CinemaScore, which means that fans of the show have really delved into the film.
In fourth place is Downton Abbey: A New Era, which won $ 5.9 million over the three-day period. The four-day gross income will bring it closer to my forecasts for the second week, but its 63% drop shows how charged the film really is and that it doesn’t really go beyond the main fans. I will stop calling this a failure, because once international figures are involved, the sequel will be fine, but Focus Features probably feels a little disappointed with its performance. To date, Downton Abbey: A New Era has earned $ 28.4 million in the domestic box office.
The top five are The Bad Guys, which raised $ 4.6 million in three days. That’s a 25% drop and a decent retention for a film that’s already six weeks old. This film has really been the surprise hit of the last few weeks and continues to shine, retaining a position in the top five box offices since its opening. So far, The Bad Guys have earned $ 81.3 million in the home office.
In other important news at the box office, ten weeks after its launch and now available for streaming, The Lost City has crossed the $ 100 million mark with a total of $ 101.7 million so far. This is a victory for the romantic comedies at the box office, as they were not what they were in recent years, and a victory for the women’s demo, which really brought the film to this level of success. Also a tribute to Paramount Pictures, which kills this year between this film, Top Gun: Maverick, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Jackass Forever and Scream. Probably spraying champagne there while we talk.
What do you think about the box office forecasts for this weekend? Remember that we will update tomorrow after the last four days come!
