Statue of Margaret Thatcher, painted red with vandals

In a statement released Sunday, Lincolnshire police confirmed they were treating the incident as criminal damage.

A spokesman for the forces said on Sunday: “Shortly before 11.15 pm yesterday, we received signals for a person shown on the video surveillance, who is acting suspiciously near the site.

“Officers were present and found that the graffiti was sprayed on the barriers around the statue, no damage to the statue itself is believed to have been caused.

“This is being treated as criminal damage and the investigation is ongoing.”

Peter Tully, who shared photos of the vandalism, described the statue as “controversial” and told Lincolnshire Live: “Support for the statue is 50-50 in Grantham, but in the country as a whole it is probably 70-30 against.”

Grantham’s Wayne Dean, 52, added: “I’ve never liked her, but this vandalism is wrong. It’s a shame. There’s no need for that. “
