A fire that broke out in downtown Derby on Saturday night (May 28th) started on purpose. A joint investigation between the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Derbyshire Police concluded that the fire on the seventh floor of Laurie House on Colyear Street was caused intentionally.
Fire trucks from across the county – as well as Nottinghamshire – were called in for the incident shortly before 9 p.m. There was a cordon around Colyear Street and Macklin Street.

The building that caught fire is next to the former Pink Coconut nightclub and next to the old Pennine Hotel, the latter of which has already been largely destroyed.
Derbyshire police have called for witnesses and said they treated the fire as “suspicious”.
A spokesman for the forces said: “A fire on the site of the old Pennine Hotel in Derby is being treated as suspicious following a joint investigation with the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service. We are now appealing to witnesses or anyone who has seen suspicious activity to come out.
“In particular, we want to know if anyone has seen people enter the McLean Street site or hang out around 6 pm on Saturday, May 28. If you can help, contact us at 101 or via social media and quote reference number 22 * 307140. “
A spokeswoman for the fire brigade thanked the emergency services and 999 operators for their assistance.
She said: “A joint investigation by Derbyshire police and the fire into the cause of the McLean Street building ended last night, finding that the fire started on purpose.
“Firefighters were called at 8:52 p.m. Saturday night with initial information that the fire was at the former Pennine Hotel. The fire was located on the seventh level of Laurie House. “
