The two boats were traveling in opposite directions when they crashed, said Mark McKinnon, a spokesman for Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources law enforcement.
One of the two boats was carrying six passengers and the other was carrying three, McKinnon said. The other four people involved in the crash received minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital in Savannah.
“The identities of those involved are being concealed pending notification of the family,” the spokesman said.
Savannah is approximately three and a half hours by car from Atlanta.
Authorities are now looking for sonar for sector scanning, McKinnon said, a device commonly used to navigate vehicles and help avoid obstacles. Two U.S. Coast Guard helicopters are also helping with the search, McKinnon said.
In a statement on Facebook, Chatham’s emergency services said a number of Chatham firefighters, EMS, Coast Guard and Marine Patrol officers were at the scene and called on people nearby to “avoid the area”.
The cause of the crash is being investigated.
