Crowds waving Israeli flags marched from the gates of Damascus, the main entrance to the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City, dancing and chanting “The Israeli Nation Lives” and “Death to the Arabs.”
Israeli police in riot gear blocked the surrounding streets, forcibly removing Palestinian protesters from the road.
Seventy-nine Palestinians were wounded in Jerusalem by rubber bullets, sonic grenades and pepper spray, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said, and one protester was shot dead.
Twenty-eight people were evacuated to the hospital after clashes with Israeli security forces and Israeli protesters, the agency said.
At least 163 Palestinians were also injured in the West Bank. At least 11 of these injuries were caused by live bullets, according to the Red Crescent.
More than 50 people have been arrested and detained for participating in riots and police attacks, Israeli police said in a statement on Sunday.
Five police officers were slightly injured in the various incidents and need medical attention, police said. More than 2,000 police and volunteers were stationed in Jerusalem.
The Flag March is an annual parade in which predominantly nationalist Jewish groups celebrate how Israel gained control of the Western Wall during the 1967 Six-Day War and captured East Jerusalem, placing the entire city under Israeli control.
The procession was also a hot spot for Palestinians in the Old City in previous years.
