British intelligence chiefs do not rule out the possibility that Vladimir Putin is already dead.
MI6 chiefs say the Russian president has been seriously ill – it is widely believed he has cancer – and that if he dies, he will remain silent to retain power for as long as possible.
A source also told the Daily Star Sunday that the recent instigators’ recent media appearances were probably pre-recorded. It is also speculated that the double may have been used at public events, such as Victory Day parade in Moscow earlier this month.

An intelligence source said: “Putin is very ill and when he dies, his death will be kept secret for weeks, if not months. It is also possible that he is already dead.
“It is impossible to know. Putin is believed to have used doubles in the past when he was ill, and the Kremlin can do so now.
“Putin is the leader of a small group of high-ranking officials who are completely loyal to him. The real fear (for his friends) is that once his death is announced, there may be a coup in the Kremlin and Russian generals will want to withdraw from Ukraine.
“Putin’s death will leave them powerless and vulnerable, so it is in their personal interest to say that Putin is alive – when the opposite may be true.
The 69-year-old’s health has visibly deteriorated in recent months. He appears to have problems with mobility and swelling of the face, and some believe he may have blood cancer.
Two weeks ago, a Russian oligarch with close ties to the Kremlin said Putin was “very ill with blood cancer” and underwent surgery before invading Ukraine. Ukraine’s chief of military intelligence, Major General Kirilo Budanov, also said Putin was seriously ill with cancer.
