If there’s one thing the village of Alma is famous for other than Fundy and Lobster National Park, it’s Kelly’s sticky rolls.
Cinnamon delicacy has been a staple of the coastal community for decades.
But after 27 years, the owners of Kelly’s Bake Shop, who make the delicious dessert, decide to move on.
“My husband works seven days a week in the summer for 27 years,” said Angela Elliott, co-owner of the bakery.
Shift – NB6: 33 Sticky buns for sale
Have you ever driven to Alma for just one of those famous sticky buns? Well, now the bakery – and the recipe – are being sold to the right buyer. Host Khalil Akhtar talks to current owner Angela Elliott.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve had a summer weekend.”
Family ties
The bakery is in the family of two generations.
Elliott’s parents bought the bakery when her partner was six.
They ran it for 17 years until Elliott and her partner bought it.
“In fact, we weren’t even married when we bought it,” Elliott said.
“We were 22 years old. We really were just babies.”
But things have changed for the family.
Their 20-year-old son has decided to move away from baking, so Elliott said it made sense to allow another baker to take over the popular store.
And Elliott believes there are many opportunities for growth.
“Whoever does this will have so many opportunities available with the opening of the Fundy Trail,” Elliott said.
“We haven’t even touched the surface for catering, distribution, production. There are many opportunities here and we just think now is the time. “
Known recipes included
Although the actual bakery is included in the asking price, the real value can only be Mrs. Kelly’s recipes.
This, of course, includes the recipe for the famous sticky rolls.
The recipe has existed since the bakery was opened in the 1960s.
“She only did two or three dozen a day, and when she wasn’t there, that was all,” Elliott said.
“It never became a famous item… until my husband’s parents picked it up… it just seemed to stick.”
