Homeowners have been warned by pest experts that “cat-sized” swimming rats are sneaking into toilets to break into people’s homes.
Pest control experts say they can trample water for “up to three days” and warn people to secure their homes so they can’t enter.
Yorkshire Live reports that pest control expert Ian Hellands warned: “I have had more calls than ever from homeowners who have heard noise looking down their toilets only to find a giant rat.
“No one is safe. Rats are excellent swimmers with flexible bones and can be squeezed into the smallest space.

“They can hold their breath for three minutes and tread water for three days and go out the sewer.
“They are cunning and they are getting bolder and bolder. In principle, if they want to enter your home, they will. “
The explosion in the number of rats in the United Kingdom is causing chaos. They are said to number 150 million – the most.
Mr Hellands continued: “This is increasing by 25% every year during the Covid pandemic.
“People are scared and they should be. There are more rats than ever and they are taking power. I’ve seen some cat-sized ones. “

He said the increase in the number of people working from home means that rats do not have as much food to eat in city centers – so they come to homes instead.
Mr Hellands, who runs the Pests Be Gone pest control business in Sussex, said: “There are ways to protect your home from pests.
“You can get rat gates for plumbing – they have been used in many rural areas, such as near canals, but now we recommend them even in built-up residential areas.
