From competitions to picnics: 20 great anniversary days outside Day trips

The Queen’s main platinum anniversary weekend – the official celebration – begins at 10 a.m. on June 2 with the color of the Horse Guards Parade in central London (also shown on big screens in St. James’s Park and live on television). At 21:00 the main lighthouse will light up: a 21-meter “tree of trees” made of 350 smaller trees. Another 1,500 beacons will be lit around the United Kingdom, the Overseas Territories and the British Commonwealth. Other official events include a thanksgiving service at St. Paul’s Cathedral on June 3, a palace party on June 4, led by Queen (with Adam Lambert), Alicia Keys and Sam Ryder of Eurovision, and a competition at Buckingham Palace on June 5. The competition includes a march on the river of hope: 200 silk flags made and worn by students, themed around the climate crisis and presenting their aspirations for the next 70 years.

Picnic in the park, Windsor

The Windsor and Maidenhead Royal District is a major entertainment hub, focusing on the Long Walk at Windsor Great Park. Events include lighting a lighthouse and fireworks on June 2nd, a concert at St. George’s Chapel on June 3rd, a free anniversary party “Bring Your Picnic” on June 4th – with music, sports and cars from seven decades – and a Big Lunch on June 5th. .

The takeover of Belfast in 1950

On June 4, the cultural venue 2 Royal Avenue goes back in time to Belfast from the 1950s with art workshops, live music, storytelling, film screenings, a photo exhibition and dancing. The café will serve dishes of the decade (free, some ticket events). Elsewhere in the city, the jubilee lighthouse will be lit in front of the Titanic Belfast and the town hall, which will be lit in royal purple on June 5, will host a tea dance.

Bath takes a step forward, highlighting a number of purple landmarks on June 2, including Pulteney Bridge, Guildhall, Roman Baths and Abbey (free, 10 p.m.). Bath on the Beach opens for the summer of June 2 at Royal Victoria Park and distributes free Pimm’s over the weekend (reservation required). On June 5 there is a big jubilee picnic on the lower lawn of the Royal Crescent with free face painting, children’s animators and arts and crafts (free, 12-17 pm). Royal Crescent hotel & spa organizes a garden party with afternoon tea, live music and lawn games (£ 55).

York is bidding to have the most oatmeal during the holidays: the city center will be covered more than two miles away. In St. Sampson Square, archival footage of the Queen’s visits to the north will be shown on a big screen, along with daily screenings of the animated film The Queen’s Corgito (June 2-4). Other green spaces in the city will have giant Union Jack loungers large enough for two, including Dean’s Park, St Anthony’s Garden and Museum Gardens. The Spring Fair and Food Festival at the York Racecourse includes more than 40 merchants, DJs, bands, a retro entertainment fair, lighthouse lighting and a big anniversary lunch. There is a solemn service at the York Temple on June 4; jubilee open market in Carlton Towers, also on June 4, with Pimm’s and strawberries and cream; and many gin tastings at the York Gin Shop (June 2-5).

Proclamations and palaces, Norwich

City mourners will read a proclamation to the Queen as lighthouses shine on June 2 in Norwich and cities in Norfolk. The Chantry Place Mall becomes the Chantry Palace for the weekend, with royal guards on duty, a throne and a red carpet, and a family corgi-themed walkway (June 2-5). Norwich Cathedral has a performance of the Handels of the Handel Coronation on 4 June (from £ 15 adults / £ 5 children). The Assembly Rooms serves the Queen’s favorite afternoon tea, which includes a chocolate chip cookie cake topped with gold leaf (£ 24.95, until 30 June).

Bands and beers, Bristol

Bristol hosted an all-day big jubilee lunch at College Green on June 5, with live music and activities, including the creation of a royal paper flotilla, while raising money for local food charities (free). The Mall, a Clifton pub, has a Platinum Fest on June 3, with live bands and food stalls (free, 1:30 p.m.). Berwick Lodge has a Platinum Jubilee Afternoon Tea Party with Pianist, Berwick Bake Off, Garden Tours and more (from £ 29.95). The new Bedminster Beer Trail kicks off over the bank holidays weekend – drinkers gather brands from independent pubs, bars and breweries along the way to request a free festival beer at the Bristol Beer Factory tap (June 2-5).

Castles and palaces

Several of the castles and palaces in the United Kingdom hold special events. At Hampton Court Palace in south-west London, there are Jubilee Tournaments in the Gardens, where knights will compete for the Jubilee Cup (June 1-5, included in the standard entry price).

This year’s exhibition at the ballroom of Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire presents a dress worn by the Queen on her last anniversary, and the café serves special afternoon tea (£ 15 entrance + £ 30 for afternoon tea, 2-5 June).

Cardiff Castle is hosting a Platinum Jubilee concert on June 4 with choirs, orchestras and singers, including Bonnie Tyler (£ 32.50 adults, children free).

At Lincoln Castle, visitors can join the site’s big British anniversary picnic, with entertainment from the castle rostrum (free, 2-5 June).

Gala concert, Birmingham

The Birmingham Symphony Orchestra performs a program of works presented by John Susche, which will include music from the coronation, works dedicated to the Queen and Princess Margaret, music from across the British community and some of the Queen’s favorite tunes (June 2, £ 13). ). Other events in Birmingham include a four-day celebration in Victoria Square, with family games, an entertainment fair and live music (June 2-5).

Great British bands, Skegness and Mablethorpe

Two seaside resorts in Lincolnshire, Skegness and Mablethorpe, celebrate British bands formed during the Queen’s reign in honor of Coldplay, the Spice Girls, the Oasis, the Beatles, the Madness and, of course, the Queen. The concerts, which are free, start at 1 pm on June 4 and all groups will play in both places. The events end with fireworks on the beach at 10 pm.

Flotilla, mouth of the Humber

A flotilla of 70 ships will parade from Victoria Pier in Hull to Humber Bridge on June 2, including pleasure boats, port tugs, a lifeboat and a trawler. Viewpoints (free) include Hull and St. Andrews Pier in Hull; Water’s Edge Rural Park in Barton-upon-Humber; and Hessle Foreshore. The event restored Humber’s flotilla from 2012, celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, in turn based on one of 1897’s for Queen Victoria. The action begins with a family gala in Hessle at 15:00, followed by the early evening flotilla and culminating in the lighting of the national lighthouse at 21:45.

Platinum Street Party, Bishop of Auckland

11Arches Park in Bishop Auckland, Durham County, says it is hosting one of the country’s largest jubilee street parties (June 4). The afternoon begins with a stunt show, Fina and the Golden Nose, a family tale with championships, tricks, jumps and chariot races. The show was followed by live music on the lake and a giant party with seats for 2,500 people inside and outside the Arches Hall. Guests can choose from barriers to outdoor dining tables (£ 30 adults / £ 20 children) or an indoor three-course dinner with wine (£ 59). There are themed bars, an open-air dance floor, a live broadcast of the anniversary concert and, for the final, a light and water show with fireworks.

Flower show in Manchester

This city flower show (June 2-5, free) is on a jubilee theme this year, with colorful honors throughout the city. The Queen’s Jubilee Trail has 10 professional displays that you can find, from a giant queen bee to a floral image of the crown’s jewelry. There are many more displays in shop windows, doors and planters, from florists, artists and community groups, on topics including the Queen’s Gambit. The Periphery Festival has alternative exhibitions in places, including Noma, the Museum of Science and Industry, First Street and the Great Northern Warehouse, such as punk poses inspired by the Sex-Pistols. Bars and restaurants will have pop-ups, and about 10 have a cocktail of flowers: the summer garden at Harvey Nichols x Manchester Gin bar sounds appropriately festive (raspberry gin and pink vermouth, £ 8).

Exmouth Festival, Devon

The Exmouth Festival (free, June 2-5), usually held in May, has been delayed to join the June Jamboree this year. The designated day for the celebration of the anniversary is June 5. There will be a big anniversary lunch, social art experience, circus skills workshops, live theater and music, including jazz and swing. Elsewhere in Exmouth there is a big band concert at the Exmouth Pavilion (June 2, £ 17) and the Jubilee Beacon Trail around town.

Jubilee Festival Elgar, Worcester and Malvern

The Elgar Festival has concerts, street performances, talks and seminars in Worcester and Malvern (June 3-5, with tickets). It includes music related to the Queen, including Elgar’s children’s suite and Von Williams’ Te Deum and performed by the English Symphony Orchestra and the Elgar Festival Choir at Worcester Cathedral. Other performances include the English String Orchestra playing Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro; and the Elgar Family Concert for Everyone; and a jubilee tea party with a prosecco and swing concert at Henry Sundane Hall.
