iOS 16: Apple may bring this handy new feature to your iPhone in 2022

Bloomberg sources report that Apple is planning major improvements to the iPhone’s lock screen in the upcoming iOS 16 and iPhone 14.

News of the possible features of iOS comes ahead of Apple’s World Conference on Developers (WWDC) in 2022, starting June 6, where it shares what’s new in its operating systems and hardware.

The always-on lock screen will provide convenient information at a glance, similar to the always-on mode in Apple Watch 5 from 2019 and later, as well as new widget-like features and wallpapers.

Bloomberg reports that the always on mode will be exclusive for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Recent rumors suggest that the iPhone 14 will receive an A16 chip, a new slot for facial identification and a 48-megapixel main camera.

Supporting the idea of ​​an always-on display, the iPhone 14 is expected to have an OLED screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, but also to use low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) technology. LTPO allows AMOLED displays to refresh at high speeds where needed, and much lower speeds for static information to save energy.

CNET’s Stephen Shankland has a detailed review of LTPO in Apple products. LTPO allows high resolution, adjustable refresh rate and ultra low power consumption, but comes with a 5% to 10% markup. LTPO is activated always included in Apple Watch 5 and is the basis of the function for smooth scrolling of ProMotion in iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. These iPhones support a refresh rate between 10Hz (refresh rate 10 times per second) up to 120Hz.

The iPhone 14 may also cost $ 100 more than Apple’s 2021 range, and initial shipments of new models may be low due to China’s COVID-19 restrictions imposed in Shanghai this March.

Apple is unlikely to announce the iPhone 14 at WWDC, but is expected to introduce a new MacBook Air, which was last updated in late 2020 with the M1 chip and specifications close to the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro.
