Without a race, 2021 was the year in which pop culture was one of the biggest trends in baby names, with names inspired by Netflix broadcasts in the top 100.
Maeve, Otis and Eric, who became popular with the character from the rough Netflix series “Sex Education”, entered the top 100, while the names inspired by YOU Love and Henry rose to the top of the charts.
Penelope rose to No. 71, perhaps influenced by Miss Federington in Bridgerton, Made in Chelsea-inspired names also rose in popularity, with Miles reaching number 56, Harry in the top ten, Millie in 31st, and Ollie. climbed with 13 seats.
SPORTS HEROES
After a summer filled with sporting events, including the UEFA European Championships, which kicked off in June, and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in July and August, sports enthusiasts also drew inspiration from their characters.
The feats of Harry Kane and Harry McGuire during the Euros led to the name entering the top ten, while Jack was also a popular option after the rise of Jack Greenish’s popularity this year.
The British team made its second best Olympics in the Tokyo Games this year, winning 65 medals.
Jason Kenny, the first Briton to win seven Olympic gold medals with a spectacular men’s Keirin title defense, saw Jason’s name reach number 84 on the boys’ top 100 list.
TRAVEL
As international travel has been a major topic of discussion this year, with restrictions updated to reflect pandemic statistics, some parents have chosen names for wandering, choosing patronymics such as Ocean and Destiny, making the girls top 100.
NEUTRAL SEX
Meanwhile, gender-neutral names have also been a popular trend in 2021, with Willow reaching number 20 on the girls’ top 100 list and climbing out of the top 100 for boys.
Noah was a big favorite for the boys, reaching second place and rising in popularity among girls as well as Blake.
DEATH OF OLD NAMES
However, some names have fallen out of favor this year, with no new registrations recorded by BabyCentre.
That was the case with Pierce, as well as with Elliott, Clive, Maurice, Roger, Clifford, Dwayne, Vernon, and Daryl.
The names of the girls who were not registered this year include Maud, Tina, Pauline, Doreen, Doris, Edna, Glinis, Bertha, Kerry and Gertrude.
