It is “shocking” to see Schumacher’s car split, say Formula 1 drivers

Schumacher lost control of his Haas F1 car, which went through the chicane of the swimming pool, after switching to dry tires at the Monaco Grand Prix, sending it into a turn.

After hitting an Armco on the right side of the track, Schumacher’s car crashed into the Tecpro barrier at the exit of the turn. The rear of his Haas F1 detached from the rest of the chassis, including the suspension and gearbox, but Schumacher himself quickly said he was fine.

Schumacher got out of the car without help and was taken to the medical center as a precaution before being quickly released. He later explained that the incident felt “super strange”.

Race director Eduardo Freitas initially called for a virtual safety car before upgrading to a full safety car. The race was subsequently marked with a red flag to allow the barriers to be repaired.

A number of pilots expressed shock after seeing the crash site after the race. AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasley said he looked “bad” and worried about Schumacher, making the right decision to fly a red flag.

“When I saw the gearbox completely removed, it was pretty shocking,” Gasley said. “It took them a while for the red flag, but that was the right thing to do. I was a little surprised that we had a VSC, not a safety car right away. But I have to review the race, it’s been a long time, a lot has happened. “

Fernando Alonso of Alpine called the crash “massive” and said he hoped F1 would “learn something from today”, noting how the increased weight of cars was affecting accidents.

“I don’t think it’s a problem with the car, but how hard you hit it,” Alonso said.

“With these cars, they are very heavy, over 800 kg, so the momentum you enter the wall is much higher than in the past. As I said, we probably learned something from today.”

Aston Martin driver Sebastian Vettel has been Schumacher’s mentor for much of the young German’s career, taking advantage of advice from Schumacher’s father, Michael.

Vettel said he was “pleased to hear on the radio that it is good before the incident”, and called for Schumacher to be reduced.

“It’s so easy to get confused so quickly,” Vettel said. “I do not know exactly what happened to him, I have not seen him. The main thing is that it is good

“There is no doubt that he is capable of doing much more than what he is showing at the moment. But I think you guys need to give him some rest.”
