NASCAR Coca-Cola 600: Denny Hamlin wins big double victory

Closing NASCAR Cup SeriesThe schedule for May was the Coca-Cola 600 in Concord, North Carolina on Sunday, where Denny Hamlin emerged the winner of the longest race of the season.

Here are the highlights of Charlotte Motor Speedway:

Green!

Hamlin topped the starting lineup on Sunday, followed by Kurt Bush, Christopher Bell, Kyle Bush and William Byron, finishing in the top five.

First attention

There was a big accident with two cars in turn 4 involving Ryan Price, Chris Buscher and Noah Gragson.

Meanwhile, Josh Bilicki burst to third place after starting from 32nd.

Third warning

The green flag reappeared in lap 23, but did not last long as Bilicki hit the driver’s side hard and joined Price, while the two cars fled just 33 laps after the crash clock on Price’s team.

The third warning in the race came when Daniel Suarez made a pass for the lead and chaos ensued. Kyle Bush was left with flat tires, but did not suffer much damage, although he lost his position on the track.

Follow the driver

After Toyota took the lead in Saturday’s qualifier, it was Chevrolets 1-2-3-4 with Suarez, Elliott, Alex Bowman and Byron in the top four. Hamlin was the first Toyota in fifth place, and Austin Cindrick was the first Ford in sixth.

Another bites the dust

Corey LaJoie spun around and crashed into Turn 2 – almost the same place he crashed on Saturday.

That’s right, both Spire Motorsports cars were out of the race.

Stage 1 is ready

Elliot detained Tyler Reddick to win Stage 1 – his third stage victory of the season. Bell, Ross Chastain and Buba Wallace rounded out the top five in the opening round.

Turn Turn 4

Misfortune befell Wallace when he lost it on turn 4 – but he got lucky and slid straight into his pits in the pit in the process. This drew the sixth warning in the race before the green flag reappeared in lap 132.

Fight the bus

Meanwhile, Kyle Larson continued to fight on the track, between hitting the wall, two penalties for a pit road and a pit fire.

“I think it was the worst race of my life and we’re not even halfway there,” he said.

Yellow flags are flying

Cindric turned in turns 3 and 4 and crashed hard into the outer wall after the left rear tire burst, leading to another precaution.

The crash interrupted what was supposed to be a three-car battle for the lead between Kurt Bush, Elliott and Chastain, but it was a happy breakthrough for Wallace, who received a free pass to return to the leading lap after a turn to cause a previous caution.

The big one!

There was a monstrous collision in turns 1 and 2, as Blaney, Kurt Bush and Brad Keselowski were among those gathered for the 10th warning in the race.

Stage 2 in the books

Suarez won Stage 2, followed by teammate Chastain. Eric Jones used fresh tires to climb third, followed by Chase Briscoe and Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who rounded out the top five.

The unfortunate 13

Gragson issued the 13th warning of the evening as he turned in the grass.

Team Trackhouse predominates

Chastain took the lead in the third stage of the race as the last 100 laps began in Concord.

End of working hours

The green flag returned with the remaining 93 laps. Reddick was prompted by Cole Custer to take the lead before Chastain regained the lead just after four o’clock.

Big crash in the front

Suarez spun in front of the traffic and was hit by Todd Gilliland, and then Buscher spun in the rubble before turning over several times and ending up in the grass upside down.

This big clash led to a short red flag with 53 laps to go and tied with the 16th warning in this race, the most visible since 2019 Coca-Cola 600.

Home stretching

It was a back-and-forth battle on the last few laps, with Larson and Briscoe’s neck and neck to the end.

Not so fast!

Briscoe tried to clear Larson, but failed to pull him out, and Larson held the lead with three laps left, while Briscoe spun around and pulled out another warning, a total of 17.

It was an ominously similar move when Brisco tried to plant a dive bomb for Reddick to win the last lap of the Bristol Dirt race, but it didn’t work and ended up costing Briscoe and Reddick the checkered flag.

To be continued

Austin Dillon, Hamlin, Larson and Chastain were four wide for the lead and ended up with Dillon facing the outside wall to cause another big buildup that brought out Dillon, Larson, Chastain and Custer.

Double overtime

This led to a doubling of overtime, with Hamlin leading after a wild night in NC Kyle Bush, Kevin Harwick, Briscoe, Bell, Reddick, Stenhouse Jr., Michael McDowell, Larson and Bowman rounded out the top 10 respectively.
