The victim of a recent murder in Surrey has been identified by police, and investigators say his death was not accidental.
The integrated homicide investigation team said Monday morning that the victim was 18-year-old Maanav Kinkar of Burnaby. IHIT said it hoped Kinkar’s name disclosure would help identify more witnesses.
Police were called Friday after the body was found in Hazelnut Meadows Park, near 140th Street and 68th Avenue. Investigators said at the time that the victim’s injuries “corresponded to the alleged poor play”. IHIT confirmed on Monday that it believes Kinkar’s death was targeted but not linked to the ongoing gang conflict in the Lower Continent.
Police said they were working to compile a chronology of Kinkar’s events, saying his parents had reported him missing. Detectives said Kinkar arrived at SkyTrain’s Surrey Central on Thursday night and may have boarded a bus.
Police shared two surveillance videos taken from transit stations. One shows a young man touching his map with a compass and entering the station through the tariff gates. The second shows the same person passing through the station.
Anyone who saw Kinkar tonight was asked to contact IHIT. Those with a control camera or security video, as well as all witnesses from the Hazelnut Meadow Park area between 6pm and 9pm on May 26, were also asked to contact investigators at 1-877-551-4448.
“This is a quiet area with several residences around the park at 140, 68 Avenue and 142,” said a sergeant. David Lee of IHIT in a news release. “In these homes there may be video and witnesses we are looking for.
