Apple’s iPhone 14, which is likely to be released in the fall, will have a feature that Android devices have had for years: a display always on.
That’s according to Mark German of Bloomberg, who outlined Apple’s possible plans in the latest part of its Power On newsletter (via MacRumors). According to the report, Apple’s iOS 16 – likely to come with the next iPhone – will come with an “improved” lock screen that will have wallpapers that have gadget capabilities.
This display is not always on yet, which would mean that part of the display is backlit with some basic information, even when the phone is asleep. But Gourmet says the new features in iOS 16 will have “future support” for the always-on lock screen, although it’s uncertain whether it will be ready in time for the iPhone 14.
Gourmet also claims that the always-on mode, if that happens, will be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Always-on display is familiar to owners of Android phones, including those from Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo, many of whom have been offering this feature for years. Apple’s own Apple Watch also has an always-on display mode (starting with the Apple Watch Series 5 and on).
Rumors of an always-on display coming with the iPhone aren’t new either. Gourmet himself predicted last year that the feature will be available on the iPhone 13, which never materialized.
In other Apple-related news, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently tweeted that Apple is unlikely to launch its augmented reality hearing phone at this year’s WWDC. Kuo still believes that Apple will release it next year.
