Canada adds Putin’s alleged girlfriend to the sanctions list

Canada has imposed sanctions on Alina Kabayeva, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s girlfriend.

The former Olympic gymnast is one of 22 close associates of the Russian regime added to the list of sanctions for the country’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

The United Kingdom sanctioned Kabayeva earlier this month, and her name is reported to have appeared on a draft list of people who could be sanctioned by the European Union.

At the time, Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie did not rule out the possibility of making such a move, saying Canada wanted to keep pace with its allies in imposing sanctions on Putin-linked people.

Canada has announced a new round of sanctions against supporters of President Vladimir Putin

Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie says the round of sanctions is aimed at banks, oligarchs and Putin’s current partner.

“We need to stifle the Putin regime. This is our goal from the beginning and this is what we will continue to do,” Jolie said in a fight with reporters on Tuesday.

She said that although Canada and its allies do not impose sanctions on the same people and organizations at the same time, their approach is still coordinated.

“What we do is that sometimes we take the lead, sometimes we work with the Americans, sometimes we work with the Europeans,” she said.

“At the end of the day, when all the G7 ministers come together, we know we are working on the same entities and people.”

The latest round of sanctions, which includes four financial institutions, went into effect last Friday.

Canada has sanctioned more than 1,500 individuals and legal entities since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.
