We learn more about what happened the day Halina Hutchins was killed on the set of the movie “Rust” in Santa Fe, from an interview that props on the set did with investigators of the sheriff of Santa Fe.
“I heard the shot and I heard Joel screaming,” said Sarah Zachary, Rust’s master. “When the shot went off, I suddenly saw Hannah in front of him. She turned around and said that this should not have happened, my whole career was ruined, “she said.
Zachary was referring to Rust’s gunman, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was watching the guns on set.
After the shooting, Zachary said she returned to the cart where the weapons were loaded on the set and made a shocking discovery.
“I went to the cart because I had a suspicion of what had happened, um and or, not what happened, but as you know, to see if there were any other live cartridges in the box she took out. I started shaking the cartridges and found a few more in them, “said Zachary.
PDQ Arm and Prop supplied the film with ammunition and weapons, according to photos of evidence that the bag with the live label was found from the props store in Albuquerque.
Zachary continues to tell investigators that there were two more shooting weapons that were incorrect.
“The double accidentally fired Henry’s rifle. I don’t know how, because he was in the cabin. No one else was there, “Zachary said.
One of the misfires involved Zachary, she said it happened while reloading one of the weapons.
“It was an accident and, you know, always, if I help, I always do it safely. And it was aimed at the ground and there is no projectile, so no one was hurt, “said Zachary.
Zachary finally told investigators that the safety bulletins, which are documents designed to clarify best practice safety on set, were never published by assistant director Dave Halls.
She also said security meetings were almost non-existent.
“I think we actually only had a safety meeting once or twice, and I was just looking at the initials or what weapons we were going to use for this kit,” Zachary said.
No criminal charges have been filed against those involved in the shooting.
