A doctor who nearly killed a nurse with “exorcism” was banned from practicing

It was ruled that a doctor who nearly killed his girlfriend while trying to “cast her out of evil spirits” would never work in the medical profession again.

Dr. Hosam Metuali was jailed for 14 and a half years in September for a series of horrific acts, including injecting nurse Kelly Wilson with life-threatening drugs that left her in a deep coma in hospital. The 61-year-old was denounced as a “disgrace” to the profession and the case was described as “unlike anyone else in Humberside police history”.

Metuali, described as a “religious fanatic”, was previously an anesthesiologist at the NHS and practiced at the Princess Diana of Wales Hospital in Grimsby, while running a clinic from his home in the city. He was jailed in Sheffield court last year after being convicted on eight counts, including distributing poison with intent to endanger his life.

A three-day hearing by the Office of the Medical Tribunal (MPTS) ended on Tuesday, ordering the disgraced anesthesiologist to be immediately removed from the medical register. Kevin Slack, of the GMC, said that anything less than deletion would “damage public confidence in the medical profession.”

During the trial last year, it was heard that between 2015 and 2019, Metuali was convinced that his partner was “obsessed with evil spirits”, which according to the judge were “born of religious fanaticism”.

Judge Jeremy Richardson of the QC said in his sentencing that the case was “very serious and completely strange”, adding that he “has never conducted a case like this in his 41 years of professional experience in law”. He described Metuali’s relationship with Ms. Wilson as “abuse” and “a form of brainwashing.”

“You used your strength and your professional training as a doctor to commit very serious crimes,” he said in sentencing in September. “You have perverted one of the central principles of the medical profession by using medical procedures to commit crimes.”

The tribunal also heard this week that Metuali secretly filmed two patients undressing – crimes he pleaded guilty to in court. His voyeurism was called a “grotesque” breach of trust that made one of the victims feel “broken.”

Mr Slack referred to comments that “there is no evidence that Dr. Metuali has any idea of his actions; there was no apology and no remorse. ” He also echoed Judge Richardson’s comments that the doctor had “almost killed” Ms Wilson and “exploited her vulnerability”.

He said Metuali was fighting most of the charges until a contested trial and “even now he seems to be challenging his sentences.” Although Metuali is currently behind bars, the panel also issued an immediate removal order, which, if released, would have prevented him from practicing during the appeal period.
