A domestic dog in Kugaaruk has been euthanized after killing a fox that showed possible signs of rabies, the health ministry said on Wednesday.
The department also reported that tests performed on a dog that died after a fox attack in Whale Cove last month have yielded positive results.
“Due to the danger of rabies, we advise all residents to watch out for foxes in the area,” spokesman Chris Puglia said in a press release.
He said anyone who was bitten or scratched by a fox or dog should go to the local health center immediately and report the incident.
“Treatment should be started soon after exposure, as rabies infections are almost always fatal,” Puglia said.
He said pets that spend time tied up outdoors should be monitored for behavior changes and possible signs of rabies, including strange behavior, staggering, foaming at the mouth, choking or making unusual noises.
Animals showing these symptoms should be avoided and reported to the regional environmental health service at 867-645-8071 or the conservation officer at 867-896-9189, Puglia said.
Residents who spot foxes or wolves roaming near communities should also contact the conservation officer, he said.
