Much of Ontario’s campaign period has been spent talking about what party leaders say and where they’ve traveled – but there are some local races that are heating up.
Here are 11 rides to watch on election day:
Von Woodridge
Where is this ride?
This ride is located in the York region and covers much of Vaughan west of Highway 400 and south of Major Mackenzie Drive.
Why is it remarkable?
Liberal leader Stephen Del Duca hopes to regain his seat in his home after losing to the Progressive Conservatives in 2018. Del Duca is the only party leader not to have a seat in the legislature in the past, and polls suggest be a close conversation with computer owner Michael Tibolo.
Money sound Muskoka
Where is this ride?
The ride is in the heart of the villa country and covers much of Parry Sound and Muskoka, including Huntsville, Bracebridge and Gravenhurst.
Why is it remarkable?
Parry-Sound Muskoka is the only ride other than Guelph where the Green Party candidate is gaining ground. The current MPP for this ride, PC Norm Miller, is not running for office, and the Liberals rejected their candidate after learning of a book he published with scientifically unfounded views on homosexuality.
Don Valley West
Where is this ride?
Don Valley West is an extensive ride that starts on Highway 401 and continues south to the Don River, surrounded by Yonge and Leslie streets. It is considered one of the richest areas in the province and includes the Glendon campus of York University and Sunnybrook Health Center.

Why is it remarkable?
Former Ontario Prime Minister Kathleen Winn has held the ride since 2003, including in 2018, when she was ousted as prime minister. She is not running in this year’s election, paving the way for some new blood. Stephanie Bowman, who was on the board of the Bank of Canada, is running for the Liberals. She will compete against former Toronto police chief Mark Saunders, who threw his hat in the ring under a computer banner.
Hamilton Stony Creek
Where is this ride?
This Hamilton ride consists mostly of the Stony Creek neighborhood, north of Niagara Hill. This is an economically diverse ride with agriculture, industry and tourism.
Why is it remarkable?
Incumbent President Paul Miller has been running for the NDP since 2007, but was ousted from the party in March and is now running as an independent. The NDP said Miller was expelled from the party because an investigation revealed that he was a member of an alleged Islamophobic Facebook group. Miller said the allegations were false and that he was not responsible for the social media platform. Computers are driving soccer star Neil Lumsden in the ride, while 12-year-old city councilor Jason Farr hopes to win for the Liberals.
York South Weston
Where is this ride?
This ride is located at the western end of Toronto, bordering Highway 401, the Humber River, Connie Street and the Canadian Pacific Railroad. It was a diverse population with a mixture of middle- and low-income housing.
Why is it remarkable?
Toronto City Councilor Michael Ford, who is also a nephew of Doug Ford, is running as a computer candidate in this ride. He faces incumbent NDP President Faisal Hassan, who won in 2018 with 36.1% of the vote compared to 33% of the PC.
Brampton North
Where is this ride?
This ride in the Peel region covers Brampton and a bit of Dufferin-Caledon and consists mainly of middle- and upper-middle-income residents in residential areas.
Why is it remarkable?
Just before the order was issued, the NDP official for this ride lost his party’s candidacy to Sandip Singh, a marketing director with little experience in politics. He will compete against Harinder Malhi, who was the liberal MPP for Brampton-Springdale between 2014 and 2018, and PC Graham McGregor. The NDP was slightly ahead of personal computers in 2018 in Brampton North by just 1.2 percentage points.
Eglinton Lawrence
Where is this ride?
Eglinton Lawrence is bordered by Highway 401, Yonge Street, Eglinton Avenue and the Canadian National Railroad.
Why is it remarkable?
Eglinton Lawrence’s ride was a stronghold of the Liberals until the 2018 general election. Liberal Mike Cole served as MPP from 1999 to 2018, when he was ousted by the PC candidate in a very close race. Incumbent President Robin Martin won 40.4 percent of the vote in the last election, compared to 38.4 percent in Cole.
Barry Springwater-Oro-Medonte
Where is this ride?
The ride is in Simco County and includes parts of Bari, Springwater and Oro Medonte.
Why is it remarkable?
Longtime Barry mayor Jeff Lehmann is running as a Liberal candidate against PC incumbent and Attorney General Doug Downey. While Downey won successfully in 2018, Lehman is quite popular in the region after winning three consecutive terms. Riding was often shifted between liberals and progressive conservatives.
Western Ottawa – Nepian
Where is this ride?
The ride covers much of Western Ottawa and Nepian, bordering the Ottawa River. A number of technology giants are located in this ride and the population has mostly family incomes above average.
Why is it remarkable?
Computers won this NDP overrun by just 175 votes in 2018 and hope to retain their place. Incumbent President Jeremy Roberts will once again face NDP Chandra Pasma this year in a ride that has historically fluctuated between the PC and the Liberals.
Glengarry – Prescott – Russell
Where is this ride?
This ride is in the northwest corner of Ottawa below the border with Quebec. More than half of the population is French-speaking.
Why is it remarkable?
Incumbent President Amanda Simard is running as a Liberal candidate, but was previously voted for the post under the PC banner in 2018. She left the PC party meeting later that year after her party made cuts in French services. and sat as an independent until 2020, when he joined the Liberal Party. Mayor Alfred and Plantagen is vying Simard as a PC candidate.
Thunder Bay – Attican
Where is this ride?
This ride in northern Ontario covers most of the Thunder Bay and Rainy River areas and has an airport, government offices, Lakehead University and Confederation College. It also includes Ontario’s fifth-largest reserve, the Fort William Reserve
Why is it remarkable?
The Thunder Bay-Atikokan race was one of the closest to the 2018 election, with the NDP defeating the Liberals by just 81 votes. Incumbent President Judith Monteith-Farrell will run again, but this time with a whole new list of candidates. The Liberals have held the ride since 1990 before the last general election.
