Passenger killed after crash in downtown Calgary, driver remains in critical condition – Calgary

A young woman is dead after an accident in downtown Calgary, police initially thought she was connected to a pedestrian, but turned out to be the passenger in the crashed vehicle.

At around 3:50 p.m. Tuesday, the Calgary Police Department was called to 3 Street SW near 7 Avenue SW for signals of a collision with serious injuries. It was established from the traffic section that the passenger, a 24-year-old woman, was thrown out of the vehicle during the accident.

Police said a black Kia Soul driven by a 26-year-old man was stopped on the west side of the south-facing road.

“Kia suddenly turned in reverse and turned north, crossing the road,” CPS said in a press release, adding that during the sudden movement, the 24-year-old passenger fell from the front passenger’s door and fled. above the vehicle.

Kia then crashed into a parked and uninhabited car on the east side of the road, and the passenger was subsequently trapped under the car. Casual passers-by rushed to free her; however, police said her injuries were fatal and she died shortly afterwards in hospital.

The driver was found unconscious on the spot and taken to hospital for treatment, where he remained in serious condition.

Although speed and alcohol were ruled out as factors in the crash, police are investigating drug damage as a factor.
