Sheriff: Boy, 8, killed when a man shoots randomly at cars

FLORENCE, SC (AP) – An 8-year-old boy visiting South Carolina, New Hampshire, was shot and killed by a man who fired a gun at passing cars in the woods near his home, authorities said.

Quarius Naqua Dunham died on Sunday, the day after he was hit in the neck by a bullet while driving on a country road in the district of Florence, said Coroner Keith von Lucken.

The boy’s father was also hit in the leg by a bullet and survived, the investigator said.

Charles Montgomery Allen, 40, was arrested in the woods and charged with murder, attempted murder and four counts of firing a firearm at an occupied vehicle, Florence County Sheriff TJ said.

The sheriff said Allen appears to be addicted to drugs and deputies have dealt with him in the past, but investigators are not sure why he started shooting at cars on Saturday.

“It’s just pointless, pointless action,” Joy told WBTW-TV.

Alan was detained without bail and the prison files did not say whether he had a lawyer.

A second driver, who was present at the bond hearing, said a patron hit the roof of his car while driving on Old River Road.

“I noticed that the gentleman was aiming and I said I was going to shoot again, so I bent down and stepped on the gas to pass him, and he fired again,” Calvin Cade said.

Quorius was a third-grader at Little Harbor School in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

“An event like this touches our community as a whole,” Portsmouth school principal Steve Zadravec wrote in a statement to the community on Monday. “Our hearts are with our family as we support each other through this incredible tragedy.
