According to statistics released by the provincial government, six percent of the province’s workers – 136,300 – have earned a minimum wage in 2021. Of those workers, 52 percent were over the age of 25 and 58 percent were women.
Since 2018, the increase in the province’s minimum wage has benefited some 400,000 workers in British Columbia, most of whom are women, immigrants and young people, the province said in a statement.
BC now has the third highest minimum wage in Canada, after Nunavut ($ 16 per hour) and the Yukon ($ 15.70 per hour).
In other provinces, minimum wages range from $ 15 in Alberta and Ontario to $ 11.81 in Saskatchewan.
