A Chicago police officer was expected to spend the night in hospital after she was shot and seriously injured during a traffic stop late Wednesday afternoon in the Englewood neighborhood.
Police, meanwhile, are looking for “at least two” suspects, Police Chief David Brown told reporters.
At around 5:45 a.m. in block 6100 on Paulina Street, two uniformed men driving a marked patrol car tried to stop traffic, Brown said.
The driver of the car they were trying to stop over fled, then slowed down, coming parallel to the police car, Brown said.
Suddenly, someone in the car shot at police officers, injuring a female police officer, according to Brown, who said he was in serious but “stable” condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he would spend the night.
Earlier, Brown described her condition as critical.
The suspects crashed the car moments later in block 6400 on South Bishop Street and fled, Brown said. Witnesses told police they may have fled in different directions and fled to nearby buildings, Brown said.
The Chicago police officer from the 7th distance was shot. The officers were transported to the University of Chicago Hospital. Unknown condition. PO on the way to the hospital. More details follow. # ChicagoPolice

Police found a gun in the area where the car collided and found car keys that were dropped near the gun, Brown said.
“It’s too early to tell if it’s a gun or not,” Brown said. “But we found a gun in the immediate vicinity, where the offender fled after hitting the car.
Helicopters and police surrounded the area where the shooting took place.
At about 6:30 p.m. near the hospital, 5841 S. Maryland Ave., officers were directing traffic.
Southbound Cottage Grove Avenue was blocked on 55th Street, while traffic north on Cottage Grove was diverted east or west on 57th Street.
In addition, about a dozen police cars were stationed near and around the hospital’s emergency department.
