A woman is in hospital after being stabbed at a Metro Vancouver grocery store at noon on Thursday.
Surrey Mounties said they were called to the city’s Real Canadian Superstore just before 1pm for the incident.
They said in a press release that officers arrived at the site of 104 Avenue in the Guildford neighborhood “within minutes of the call” and found an injured woman in the store.
The woman, who police said was conscious and interacted with paramedics, received first aid and was then taken to hospital.
Officials described her injuries as “serious”, but said no more.
Mountis did not speculate publicly on the motives of the case, but said he was looking for a suspect who left the scene before police arrived.
She is described as a 30-year-old woman with long dark hair. At the time, she was wearing a navy blue shirt with a V-neck, black pants and white shoes and was carrying a blue bag, they said, posting photos of the woman.
For now, it looks like a random attack. Police said they were unaware of the confrontation before the victim was stabbed and that the women did not appear to know each other.
The stabbing was announced shortly after the provincial public security minister addressed the frequent attacks on strangers in the region.
He spoke to the British Columbia Legislature in Victoria on Thursday morning, a day after another stabbing, which appears to be arbitrary in Vancouver.
Mike Farnworth said he knew police were taking such incidents seriously and had not offered a solution. See his answer in the video above.
In Surrey, police are trying to identify a suspect and ask witnesses and those with more information to come out.
