ATLANTA (AP) – A senior Georgian election official was expected to appear before a special jury on Thursday to investigate whether former President Donald Trump and others tried to illegally interfere in the state’s 2020 elections.
Secretary of State Brad Rafensperger was summoned to the Fulton County Courthouse, where a special grand jury was meeting, according to a subpoena received from the Associated Press requesting open records. Other subpoenas are seeking documents and testimonies from five other people in his office.
Trump turned his anger on Rafensperger after his fellow Republican refused to press for the cancellation of votes that gave Democrat Joe Biden a slight victory in Georgia’s presidential election. Rafensperger defeated a Trump-approved Republican primary candidate while running for re-election.
Fulton County Attorney Fanny Willis said her investigation included a January 2021 investigation into a phone call in which Trump led Rafensperger to “find” the votes he needed to win Georgia. Trump said his conversation with Rafensperger was “perfect” and that he had done nothing wrong.
