Pollica Summer Workshop, 3rd meeting with science

The third edition of the Pollica summer workshop will start on June 6 and is scheduled to last until July 1 at the Castello dei Principi Capano. The event, which has the support of the Campania region and the municipality of Pulika, was promoted by the Steering Committee of the Pulika Physics Center, in collaboration with the National Institute of Nuclear Physics, the University of Salerno and the University of Naples.

The village of Cilento will become a real center for discussion and comparison of mathematical structures describing the fundamental laws of the universe and will host more than 80 physicists from 15 countries on three different continents. The avant-garde goal is to bring together theoretical and experimental physicists who share a propensity for interdisciplinarity, as well as the intention to explore the relationship between theory and experiment in order to solve some of the basic mysteries of the universe.

“Italy is proud of its tradition of excellence in theoretical physics, especially in the study of high energies,” said Mario Marton, Chairman of the Board of PPC and Professor of Theoretical Physics at King’s College London. With this premise, we set ourselves the goal of making southern Italy, in particular Campania, a place of international confrontation, which encourages a continuous exchange of ideas and opinions on the most complex theories in the field.

“The range of research in Polica is expanding every year. In 2022, for example, we will be dealing for the first time with real theories, as well as the search for dark matter, this component of the universe whose many properties we still ignore, “added Angelo Esposito, vice president of the steering committee and researcher at Princeton. Institute for Advanced Study (New Jersey, USA). “Our goal is to create a permanent learning center as a starting point for scientists from around the world, outside of university classrooms,” concluded Kiara Toldo, PPC Steering Committee and researcher at Harvard University (Massachusetts, USA).

Pollica, home of the Mediterranean diet, is preparing to become a hub for international conferences on high-energy physics, organized in the rooms of Capano Princes Castle in a double session: winter and summer. The initiative also aimed to support the region’s economic development outside the peak tourist season. In fact, the researchers will remain in a “scattered” situation in nine accommodation units managed by the Pollica Città Slow Host & Food Consortium.

“Research is one of the pillars of the Campania region’s competitive development strategies. In particular, “physics” is positioned among the fields of excellence in the territory, thanks to our universities and research centers such as INFN, INAF and the Capodimonte Astronomical Observatory, as well as the participation of Campaign researchers in projects as exciting as photography. on a black hole. The Pollica Summer Workshop fits into this unique context and strategic importance for disseminating and promoting Campaign research and highlighting Polica and Campaign at the heart of the global scientific debate, ”said Valeria Fassione, Research, Innovation and Launch Consultant for the Campania region.

The Pollica Summer Workshop is a scientific meeting of great importance – adds Pollica Mayor Stefano Pisani – which, among other aspects of research and training that we regularly host at Pollica, turns our Earth into a natural laboratory from the cradle of research on the longevity of the Mediterranean diet. . And its habitat, it is trying to become a model for the future of marginalized regions. We are pleased to have become an international reference point for scientists from around the world who will find many incentives here to nurture their research and studies. ”

We enthusiastically accepted the invitation to be among the initiators of a scientific initiative characterized by properties of the highest caliber – said Salvatore de Pasquale, director of the Department of Physics at the University of Salerno, who has always participated in leading research in physics as a theoretical and for experimental high energy. ” In our territory, in its most exciting corners, we host scientists and scholars from all over the world who are confronted with new reflections and ideas on complex issues, while encouraging the communication of these ideas among the general public. This creates a unique opportunity for cultural exchange, bringing even non-specialists closer to the leading scientific topics.

“The synergy created between the organizers of the Pollica Summer Workshop,” said Juliana Fiorello, a full professor at the University of Naples Federico 2, “embodies the spirit in which we work on the initiative: cooperation, discussion and broadening our perspectives.” ”.
