From now on, Turkey will be called Türkiye at the United Nations, following an official request from Ankara in an effort to distance the country from silly birds and Christmas-themed puns.
President Erdogan’s government sent a letter to the UN requesting a name change this week. The State Anatolian News Agency said Antonio Guterres, the UN secretary-general, had agreed to the request, which has been in force “since the letter was received”. Other international organizations must follow suit.
Erdogan ordered the use of Türkiye throughout the country, as it is written and pronounced in Turkish, in December, and has since called for international recognition of the change in his English pronunciation.
