Dave McCormick loses to Dr. Oz in Pennsylvania Senate primary

Businessman Dave McCormick formally lost to Mehmet Oz in the Republican primary in Pennsylvania, making Oz an official Republican nominee for the US Senate.

Driving the news: The extremely close race between McCormick and Oz had been counted, but McCormick was still failing. Trump-backed Oz will face Pennsylvania Governor John Fetterman, who is recovering from a stroke, in November.

The big picture: The counting of the results of the Republican primary in the Senate was underway, as McCormick admitted.

  • The race was largely seen as a test of Trump’s understanding of the Republican Party. Trump backed Oz, a well-known television doctor, in the early primary, and Oz announced himself as the alleged candidate as the census continued.
  • Trump supporters in Pennsylvania booed the mention of Oz’s name days before the primary.
  • It was also one of the most expensive competitions in the US Senate in the country with millions of dollars imported from all over the country, said Mike D’Onofrio Taylor Allen from Axios.
  • Oz invested at least $ 12 million of his own money in the race. McCormick spent at least $ 11 million.

The main battle of the GOP has also become a battle for postal voting. McCormick filed a lawsuit in Pennsylvania in late May to make sure all Republican ballots sent by mail without a handwritten signature could be counted.

Democrats have not been waiting around for a recount lately, as they have already campaigned against the two candidates, Axios’s Alayna Treene reported.

  • The race to replace retired US Senator Pat Toomey (R) will be monitored at the national level and the result could determine control of the upper house.
