Republican Chris Jacobs announced his retirement amid a backlash he received in support of Democrats in Congress’ efforts to pass controversial gun control measures.

Jacobs, who represents New York’s 27th Congressional District, has said he will no longer run for re-election after casting support for congressional efforts to ban assault weapons at the federal level.

“The last thing we need is an incredibly negative, half-hearted media attack, funded by millions of dollars in special interest money coming into our community around this issue of guns and gun violence and gun control,” he said. in an impromptu press. conference.

Democrats are pushing for tougher restrictions on gun purchases following recent shooting incidents, including a deadly shooting at a Texas primary school and a New York supermarket.
