One of the newest elected representatives of Ontario has extensive political experience, is a kickboxing champion on the side and gets many of his best thoughts on his lawn mower.

Meet Bobby Ann Brady, the first independent in decades to win a seat in the legislature.

“I am already formulating my goals and ambitions for our ride and the things I want to organize, the round tables and the issues I want to present first,” said the newest member of the Haldimand-Norfolk provincial parliament.

“So these things are already in my mind, and my grass is about a meter high. So tonight, as I drive around with my lawn mower, I’m sure those thoughts will continue.

Among the sea of 83 blue seats on the new Ontario electoral map won by progressive conservatives, there are sections of NDP orange in northern and downtown Toronto, a small portion of red liberal seats mostly in the pockets of Ottawa and Toronto, and a green spot representing re-election party leader.

But one ride stands out. It may be brown or gray, depending on the map, but it’s an anomaly anyway.

Brady’s victory as an independent in Thursday’s election ended the progressive Conservatives’ detention on the ride of Haldimand-Norfolk and his predecessors since 1995. This year was also the last time voters everywhere in the province sent an independent representative to the legislature.

Brady actually worked for Tory’s former representative, Toby Barrett, for 23 years as an executive and legislative assistant, and he supported her campaign.

Barrett had no plans to run again in 2022, but he and Brady – who was president of the local computer riding association – were unhappy that the party had decided not to hold a nomination meeting to appoint Haldimand Ken County mayor. Hewitt for candidate.

Barrett told local media that he was disappointed that one of his “arch rivals” would run in his ride. The story in the public publication The Sachem cites Barrett as pointing to disagreements over communications with COVID-19 and the management of the protests of the first nations.

Brady said she and Barrett could not approve Hewitt’s appointment because he had previously tried to seek a nomination from a federal liberal.

That is how her independent campaign was born, and it has become about respecting the people and listening to the voters, she said.

“I think Haldimand-Norfolk did a great job sending this message, ‘Hey, you know what? He expected us to go to the ballot box and just tick the name of the PC candidate, but we didn’t, “she said.

“You cannot constantly disrespect us, our voice and our money and continue to be rewarded.

Brady said she had received support not only from disgruntled voters of the Progressive Conservatives, but also from the Liberal and NDP camps. These people then went door-to-door, calling their friends, relatives and neighbors and helping her win, Brady said.

“We won this campaign for old-fashioned values and an old-fashioned campaign where people just went out and talked about Bobby Ann Brady and it worked,” she said.

The election rules meant that she could not spend money on the election campaign until the writing period officially began. She ordered materials immediately after the election, but her campaign signs and literature arrived only halfway through, she said.

“Other candidates were already campaigning long before me, they are already spending money on signs as soon as the order is revoked,” she said.

“So we were at a disadvantage for two and a half weeks. And yet we managed to make it happen.

Brady said he worked for his black belt in karate and kickboxed about seven or eight years ago, winning nationally and traveling to a world competition in Florida.

She is also a hockey player, participating in leagues for boys under the age of 18, after which she plays women’s hockey. It was in the arena that someone offered her to try kickboxing and she liked it.

She is excited to start working in the legislature and raise issues such as local highway infrastructure and controversial proposed developments, but for now she must allow the historic victory to sink.

“You go, you go, you go for 28 days and you don’t sleep much and you think what it looks like on the other side,” she said. “But once you get to the end of it and you’re on the other side, it’s a whole new ball of wax.”
