The NDP withheld much of the ride in northeastern Ontario in the 2022 general election.
The party retained its seats in Sudbury (Jamie West), Nickel Belt (France Jellinas), Themiscaming-Cochrane (John Wanthoff) and Muskegovuk-James Bay (Guy Bourgoin).
Meanwhile, in the Timmins ride, longtime NDP MPP Gilles Bison, who led the ride for 32 years, was defeated by former mayor and PC candidate George Peary, marking the end of an era.
The Tories also stuck to the Nipsing ride, where Vic Fedeli won by hand. The Parry Sound-Muskoka, a ride held by Norm Miller since 2001, chose another Tory after Miller did not request re-election. Graden Smith has a PC MPP in this ride tonight.
In Sault Ste. Marie, PC candidate Ross Romano, is also holding on.
Moving northwest, to Thunder Bay-Superior North, a ride led by liberal Michael Gravelle since 1999, new Democrat Liz Vojoa won tonight.
Gravel announced this year that he would not run for re-election after his previous cancer returned.
Greg Rickford (PC) remains in his seat on the Kenora-Rainy River. He will have a friend in neighboring Thunder Bay-Atikokan who is riding since the NDP Judith Monteith-Farrell lost his seat to Tory candidate Kevin Holland.
Two northern riders were among 19 who experienced delayed results tonight. The results are now for Kiiwetinoong (where NDP’s Sol Mamakua held his seat) and Algoma-Manitoulin (where NDPper Michael Mantha held his seat).
Overall, while the results have yet to be confirmed, Doug Ford has brought personal computers to a majority government with more than 80 seats.
The NDP will remain the official opposition with 29 seats (the results are still coming at the time of writing). However, the party will serve in this capacity without Andrea Horvat as leader. She announced tonight that she would retire.
Once again, the Liberals will not have official party status, as they have failed to secure the required 12 seats. Leader Stephen Del Duca has announced tonight that he will step down as leader.
