UPDATE at 6:30 p.m.

The Trans-Canadian Highway remains closed Saturday morning between the Spence and Leaton bridges after the Department of Transportation closed the highway on Friday due to mud on the road.

DriveBC reports that a geotechnical assessment is underway in the area, but the highway remains closed in the area.

UPDATE at 5:15 p.m.

The Department of Transportation says it has proactively closed Highway 1 between Lytton and Spence Bridge because of projected rain and the potential for debris flows.

The highway will be closed overnight and will be re-inspected on Saturday.

“The equipment and crews have been mobilized and prepared to undertake any cleaning or repairs that may be necessary for the safe reopening of the highway,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Trans-Canadian Highway is closed between Lytton and Spence Bridge due to “debris on the road”.

DriveBC says there are debris and mud on the highway and an assessment is being made. There is no estimated time for reopening, but the update is expected at 18:00

The area was burned by last year’s forest fires, leading to reduced slope stability and increased landslides this year.

Nearby Highway 8 remains closed due to flood damage in November.
