LONDON – Queen Elizabeth II delighted the crowd on Sunday with a surprise appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, closing the celebrations on the last day of her anniversary.

Dressed in bright green, the queen smiled and waved to the crowds below. She went out with Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Prince William and his wife Kate and their children George, Charlotte and Lewis.

The Royal Marines played the national anthem, “God Save the Queen,” as the crowd sang as the queen watched the huge crowd as far as the eye could see.

The queen was last seen in public on Thursday, the first day of celebrations during her record platinum anniversary. Following this appearance, also on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, the palace issued a statement saying that the Queen was retiring from certain events after experiencing “some discomfort”. She returned to Windsor Castle, which is now her main base.

The Queen’s appearance on Sunday was not scheduled. But royal fans with eagle eyes in the palace on the last day of the four-day celebration noticed that the flag of the Royal Standard was raised over Buckingham Palace in the afternoon, which means that the monarch is in residence.

The palace said there would be a “surprise” on the last day, but it was unclear whether it would be the appearance of the 96-year-old British monarch, who retired from other events.

She still managed to star in a concert at the palace on Saturday night, where she participated in a sketch with the bear Paddington.
