Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) Said Sunday that President Biden was not “useful” amid talks in Congress on gun reform as a result of the mass shootings in the United States
“I think the president may have been a president who will try to unite the people,” Tumi told moderator Margaret Brennan on CBS’s Face the Nation.
“But he has chosen not to adopt this approach,” Tumi added. “From day one, he sided with the far left of his party and did not really turn to the Republicans.
Tumi, who is part of a bipartisan group discussing the creation of weapons reform legislation, also said “the president is not very helpful.”
“I think at the end of the day it will come down to whether we can reach a consensus in the United States Senate.
The mayor of Kansas City is pushing for tougher gun laws.
Last week, Biden called on Congress to pass legislation to reform weapons, proposing laws to expand past checks, implement a national red flag system and ban assault rifles.
Tumi also said in an interview with CBS that he hopes half of his Republican colleagues in the Senate will vote on a potential deal on arms reform legislation, if any.
“I hope we get at least half the Republican conference,” Tumi told Brennan. “That must be the goal here. We will have to be realistic about what that can do. “
