Police are investigating after an 83-year-old woman died after being attacked by three dogs in northwestern Calgary.
Paramedics responded at about 2 p.m. in the Capitol Hill area of Block 1500 on 21 Avenue NW
The adult was found with serious, life-threatening injuries. Despite all the efforts of paramedics, she eventually succumbed to her injuries.
Police say the woman was in the back alley and working in the yard when a neighbor’s dogs ran away from their yard and attacked her.
According to police, depending on the outcome of the investigation, criminal charges or fines may be imposed, while dogs may be euthanized. Officials did not disclose the breed of dog.
‘THE BEST MAN’
A neighbor who was embarrassed to identify with CTV News Calgary helped his neighbor Betty when she was injured.
CTV News agreed to identify him as “Lane”, who says that Betty, known as “Rusty” or “Red” of all the neighbors, loved to work in her yard.
“She was a light little old lady, a great neighbor, agile, constantly working in the garden, pruning hedges,” Lane said.
“The best person you can hope to have as a neighbor.”
Lane’s wife heard a commotion in the alley with several dogs and went to see what had happened.
Lane then jumped to see two of the three dogs identified by police being dragged back to a neighbor’s yard.
“A little disappointed I didn’t get there a minute or two earlier,” Lane said.
“The consolation I can take is that I was there with her and she was not alone.”

Lane says he and the dog’s owner, who lives next door to Betty, tried to save her.
He pulled out towels and helped me hold Rusty while we waited for an ambulance.
Close family friends of the victim, who did not want to speak in front of a camera in front of CTV News, claimed that she was a private person and was on her way to the hospital by ambulance when she succumbed to her injuries.
